Democrats wrestle with election-year message on health care

Jul 20, 2018

WASHINGTON — Cheered on by a handful of activists, liberal House Democrats announced outside the Capitol that they were forming a caucus to push for "Medicare for All" — shorthand for government-financed health care. At the same time Thursday, Democratic senators were introducing a resolution aimed at putting Republicans on the defensive about Trump administration efforts to undermine former President Barack Obama's health care law. Neither proposal has much chance of going anywhere in the Republican-run House or Senate. But the bigger problem for Democrats is that the two messages — fundamentally reshaping the nation's health care system versus defending...

Rosenstein defends charging Russians as a deterrent

Jul 20, 2018

ASPEN, Colo. — The top law enforcement official overseeing the probe of Russian meddling in the 2016 election is defending the prosecution of foreign agents who may never see the inside of a U.S. courtroom. Speaking Thursday at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein also said the Justice Department will notify the U.S. public when it identifies efforts by foreign government to target U.S. politics. Rosenstein unveiled a report identifying the major cyber threats that the U.S. faces. "Exposing schemes to the public is an important way to neutralize them," he said. "The American people...

Translators stay in shadows, but Dems want Trump's to emerge

Jul 20, 2018

WASHINGTON — After a week of erraticism by President Donald Trump about what really went on in his private meeting with Russia's Vladimir Putin, history could use a fly on the wall. There were two — their interpreters. And some Democrats want Trump's to talk. One translator's reaction: What's Russian for fuhgeddaboudit? Diplomatic interpreters speak when they're spoken at, and that's about it. They are innermost witnesses to international history, but ultradiscreet ones, tasked with reflecting as accurately as possible and in nearly real time the words and context of conversations crossing the language barrier. They otherwise do their best...

Trump-Putin II: Planning fall event in aftermath of Helsinki

Jul 20, 2018

WASHINGTON — Unbowed by swirling criticism of his summit encounter with Vladimir Putin, President Donald Trump swiftly invited the Russian leader to the White House this fall for a second get-together. Cleanup from the first has continued with no letup and Trump belatedly decided Putin's "incredible offer" of shared U.S.-Russia investigations was no good after all. A White House meeting would be a dramatic extension of legitimacy to the Russian leader, who has long been isolated by the West for activities in Ukraine, Syria and beyond and is believed to have interfered in the 2016 presidential election that sent Trump...

California sues over Trump halt to truck pollution rule

Jul 20, 2018

SAN FRANCISCO — California and 14 other states sued the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Thursday over its decision to suspend an Obama-era rule aimed at limiting pollution from trucks. The July 6 decision by the Trump EPA was illegal and could put thousands of additional highly polluting trucks on the roads, the states and the District of Columbia said in the lawsuit filed in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. The EPA said it does not comment on pending litigation. The rule at issue limited production of heavy-duty freight trucks outfitted with older engines that...
